Guest Speaker...

Polio Survivor - Mary Ellen Hemby with her daughter Jo Ladd

Mary Ellen and Jo moved to the Willis area because of a housing program supported by the US Agriculture Rural Housing Program for disabled citizens. She grew up in Nebraska but moved to the Houston area because the weather here is better for polio survivors than the cold winters in Nebraska. When she was diagnosed with Polio as a child she wan in the hospital for 6 weeks - polio can effect either the upper body like the lungs area or the nervous in the lower area like the legs - she is effected in the nerves in her legs - she has had to use leg braces, crutches, and now a wheelchair. She has taught herself how to swim. As a young person she taught herself lots of things because there was not much available for disable people back then - She went to college and got her teaching certificate - she taught montessori for many years till it got to where she could not get up and down from the floor very easy. She went to work for SW Bell and was able to work at a desk job for many years till her arms started to get week. The muscles in her body began to get weak after many years of over using her arms and legs - its an effect from the polio the doctors are now realizing is effecting the survivors - the younger doctors are not familiar with polio because it is not a disease they need to care for now. there are 2 million polio survivors. There has not been any new cases in America for a long time because of the immunization. She was married and has 2 children - She now lives with her daughter Jo and her husband, daughter and one on the way... her husband past away several years ago. Her 3 year old granddaughter brightens her day. Because of the internet - She has connected with people all over the world to talk about Polio and how people are effected and now realizes how people were very active and exercised is now effecting their health later in life. Her daughter Jo, talked about her upbringing was normal - even though helping her mom was just a way of life - she never felt like it was a burden or different - she encourages immunization and how important it is - she talks about polio to her classes and shows pictures - Jo is a teacher at Willis High School and is the Interact Club sponsor - She has realized with having her mom come talk at the school it has helped with bullying in the school - kids are realizing being different is not a weakness or outcast - you are a person too.
