MEMORY PARK NEWS:

Please join us at Memory Park after our meeting at 9 a.m. this week for a SHORT work project - we need help for about 30 minutes to move a picnic bench to the new StoryWalk Garden area of the park from its current location by the waterfall. After moving the bench we will rearrange the first StoryWalk Book around the bench - and then we are done! Short and Sweet - OK, it will be HOT, but well worth it!

"StoryWalk Phase I" is up at Memory Park. The StoryWalk is a young readers book with pages laminated to a sign. The child moves along the walk reading each page.
This project, in conjunction  with The Friends of The Charles B Stewart Library , will be a wonderful new addition to Memory Park, and will be accomplished in three phases. This very quick installation is Phase I. The book pages for young readers were quickly set up in time for the Chamber After Hours Event at the park. This week for Phase II, a picnic bench will be moved to this area and the stakes will be rearranged into a longer walk centered around in the bench.  These two temporary measures will allow young children to come and read the pages during summer vacation months while we work on Phase III, which will be a cheery, colorful garden in this space, with the book pages as part of a permanent, rotating installation.

GUEST SPEAKER
Larry Blocker with Keep Us Fed Montgomery County spoke with the club about this great organization that has been helping to support hunger relief in Montgomery County.  The organization Keep us Fed Montgomery County a 501©3 non-profit was as a result of the 2015 LMC class project.   Larry’s youngest son was a part of the 2015 class and the project has taken on a life of its own and why he and his wife are still operating the organization!Keep Us Fed is a volunteer based organization that gets in between the people that have food to throw away and those that need it. They currently have a dozen or so volunteers making 25 pickups a week.  Within the first year, the volunteers picked up 22,000lbs of food.  At June 30, 2016, the organization picked up 32,000lbs of food.   The deliveries of food are delivered to the destination within a half hour of pick up.  Most of the pickups come from local Grocery Stores, restaurants, caters, community garden, and special events such as Taste of the Town and Tastefest.  Food is delivered to The Women’s Center, Montgomery County Youth Services, Angel Reach, Children’s Books on Wheels, Coat of Many Colors, and many others.

The organization is needing more volunteers (target would be around 60-70) or monetary donations.  Volunteer time a week averages 90 minutes, gas and your personal vehicle.  The only other requirement is to take an online food handlers course the cost $9.00 and good for up to two years!
