Karen Hiarker is someone Linda would have enjoyed meeting and admired. Karen came to the United States unable to speak English. She credits her local library with "instilling in me the love of reading and with learning my new language". She graduated Summa Cum Laude from her university studies, graduating with a 3.9 GPA, and was nominated for the Dean's List. She has been married for 27 years, has two teenage children, one of whom will start college in the fall. Karen is currently a Reference Assistant at the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Branch in The Woodlands. She has worked for MCMLS since September of 2012. Her bilingual abilities are an asset in her work and her manager, Donna Dzierlenga, describes Karen as intellectually curious, conscientious, in possession of great communication skills and has a heart for assisting patrons who are not fluent in English. The scholarship was presented at the Woodlands Branch, with MCMLS Director JeriLynn Williams and all of Karen's co-workers in attendance.
